Website Design

Design for accessibility and usability

Accessibility

Making your website accessible is important, not just from a legal and moral standpoint, but because it makes it easier to use for everyone. A useful bonus is that it also makes it easier for search engines to index the content accurately, which improves search results rankings.

Here are a few ways in which we make our website more accessible.

  • We use only dynamic text for the menus, rather than graphics.
  • We use dynamic text for content so that it can be re-sized in the browser if a user finds it too small and so that browsers for the visually impaired can read it aloud.
  • We use menus and links that are easy to understand and keep things simple by using labels that users expect to find.
  • We use semantic mark-up in the HTML code for things like headings, sub-headings, captions, tables and so on, so that the meaning of a page can be understood by search engines and the content better indexed.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has laid down standards for website accessibility. In ascending order of accessibility these are known as ‘A’, ‘AA’ and ‘AAA’ standard. Our websites routinely achieve 'AA' and can achieve 'AAA' if necessary.

Usability Testing

User testing is an integral part of the design and development process.

We test our sites at all stages of development using:

  • Card sorting
  • Paper prototypes
  • Think-aloud sessions
  • Heuristic evaluations
  • Online feedback

By doing this we are able to ensure that your website will offer the best user-experience possible.
